Design Thinking
Background
I applied a design thinking approach to a sales enablement program. The materials on this page show the design thinking model that was used, an overview of the learning experience, and brainstorming assets.
Design Thinking Model
I used a 5-step design thinking model, developed and popularized by Stanford University's d.school.
The target learning audience was insurance underwriters who needed to complete a sales enablement program. The first step in the process, was to empathize with these learners by learning as much as possible about them. I completed several interviews, read research articles and blogs, and observed underwriters doing the work.
Next, the problem statement was defined, which made it easy to communicate the goal of the learning program and stay aligned with key stakeholders.
Brainstorming (ideating) by going for quantity over quality in keeping with the spirit of the design thinking process was completed next. Out of the many ideas generated for the learning experience, key stakeholders voted and ranked the learning experiences that should be designed, which lead us into the prototype phase.
Ultimately, several learning experiences were designed, including eLearning, coaching, and self-paced learning, which were then tested by a small group of test users. Continuous improvements and revisions were then made based on the performance results and feedback.
Empathize, Define, Ideate
The PDF in this section includes a Mural board that was used during the empathize, define, and ideate steps. Because of the nature of the ideate process, the Mural board might look busy or unorganized, but it was an effective tool to support these phases of the design thinking project.
Prototype and Test
Many materials were designed as part of the program, including placement exams, observation evaluations, Rise courses, Rehearsal prompts, WalkMe items, job aids, and other collateral. Unfortunately, I am unable to include these materials on my portfolio. However, you can see the outline of the learning experience and how the materials fit into the experience in the PDF linked in this section.
