Adult Learning
Overview
Learning and training should be designed in ways that align to how adults learn. Different learning theories (behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism) demonstrate that adults learn in various ways and contexts and have formed the theoretical bedrock for my learning solutions. I apply andragogic principles to my designs to ensure that learning experiences are effective from an adult learning perspective. I include additional considerations for how information is processed in the brain. Since experiences are first processed in the limbic system (emotion) before making sense of the experience in the neocortex (logical), I use emotion (when appropriate) to gain learners' attention and to help with encoding information.
Ultimately, I align the learning solution - microlearning, instructor-led, self-paced, etc. - to andragogic principles, which in turn are aligned to learning theories. I wrote a couple of blogs on the topic of adult learning: one on transformative learning and one on how learning principles connect to learning experiences. I hope that you read the blogs linked below and find the information valuable.
In this blog, I describe why transformative learning is an excellent choice for organizations trying to build a learning culture. I discuss the advantages, process, and challenges of transformative learning.
ln this blog, I write about how learning experiences connect to learning principles.
